Palm Beach Florida 1928

In July 1928, the Peter L Ferry family visited Palm Beach, Florida. (From L to R: Mother Ferry?, Leo?, Mary Alice, Bill, Jack?, and Catherine.)

Two huge events took place two months later:
EVENT 1:  The wedding of Mary Alice Ferry and Frank Diener on September 3, 1928, in the Holy Family Catholic Church in Glendale, California. It was followed by a beautiful reception at 3030 Chevy Chase Drive, the home of Mary Alice's parents. Frank and Mary Alice honeymooned for the next two weeks at Lake Tahoe and San Francisco.
EVENT 2:  In September 1928, Hurricane Okeechobee, also known as the San Felipe Segundo hurricane, damaged or destroyed much of Palm Beach County. It crumbled the dike around Lake Okeechobee and floodwaters killed approximately 2,000 people. It was one of the deadliest storms in U.S. history.
The Palm Beach visit was part of a two-month trip Peter L Ferry had planned prior to the engagement of Mary Alice and Frank. The marriage ceremony would not interfere with his arrangements! The wedding was all planned before they left. On this trip, the Ferry family toured the southern states, drove over the newly opened Florida Keys highway, enjoyed time in Cuba, and relaxed on a ship's cruise through the Panama Canal and up the Pacific Ocean. Very interesting history. It’s a good thing that hurricane didn’t happen two months earlier when they were there, wow!
