Valentine's Day 1931

From Nona's book, "Westside Pioneer Farmers," p. 14:
"February 14, 1931, was a big day for me - the beginning of a new life. My Parents, in their seven-passenger Studebaker sedan, moved the baby (Marie) and me to the ranch. The tiresome journey took us high over the mountains on the old two-lane winding Ridge Route. It was dark when we arrived at Lassen Avenue, and as it had rained the unpaved road was terribly muddy, my father put chains on the wheels of the car. For six miles, we inched our way; the car skidded and the wheels spun; we wondered if we would make it. Then we were given encouragement as we sighted the lights in our new home, a welcoming beacon.
"At long last, Frank had his family all under one roof. It was Valetine's Day and waiting for me was a big, red, heart-shaped box filled with chocolate candy. As Frank gave Marie and me a tour of our new home, I could only think how beautiful it was."

Glad you posted this. I don’t remember that passage. Despite cars & “roads” the pioneer days still existed back then, didn’t they. What a trip that must have been. When I was younger I would drive up from Castaic where you could pick up the old Ridge Route, often just dirt and go all the way to Gorman. There was an old roadhouse (converted to someone’s big home) that stood towards the top of one of the grades. I can almost picture your great grandparents with with Mary Alice and a new baby stopping there for a break.
