Romantic Story - Married on January 31, 1906

In 1905, while Peter L. Ferry was working in front of the O'Brien's home in Steubenville, Ohio, Catherine Belle O'Brien (Mother Ferry) notice him. She thought he was handsome and wanted to meet him. In those days it was not proper for a young lady to strike up a conversation with a young man. Therefore, her mother prodded her to display her prayer book when she passed by Peter on her way home from Mass so that he could see that she was a Catholic. The plan worked; the two became acquainted over conversation relating to her prayer book. After a short courtship the two were engaged. On Christmas Day, Peter presented Catherine with a large solitaire diamond engagement ring. One month later, on January 31, 1906, they were married. Mary Alice (Nona) was born on November 25, 1906.

This story is told in two of Nona's books, Green Shamrocks to Golden Poppies p.65 and Westside Pioneer Farmers p.1.
