Bill was not even born yet at the time of Mother Ferry's letter, but remembers his dad talking about that time. Here are his thoughts:
Wow! I had not thought of Mother Ferry as a letter writer. It was a very different world then. That generation wouldn’t recognize the times we are living in now.
Both Jack and Dad had already joined the service. Their thought then was that they could get their service done early and hopefully before war broke out. As we know that was not to be.
We took Dad to Fort Ord just about the time it was about to be the new Cal St campus. We found his old barracks and somewhere I have a photo of him in front of it. He recalled his time there and did mention getting packages from home. Now we know, with Mother Ferry’s wonderful letter that it was a lot of candy!
Dad was being trained for infantry and had seen some early training for both Alaska and for the tropics. I think it was while he was stationed here that the Army found out he could type. That was his ticket of of the front line and into Officers Candidate School. Dad had been a timekeeper on some of the jobs Peter L had and where he learned to type. Later, Dad was very insistent that I take a typing class before I turned 18. My hearing kept me out of the military but the typing has come in real handy in our computer driven age.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Bill
