The Acacia Street Home in Glendale

614 E. Acacia Ave (or Street) in 1910. William O'Brien, Jim Ferry, Peter L Ferry, and Mary Alice Ferry.
In 1909, Peter L Ferry moved his young family to California. Six months after their arrival, he purchased a four-acre "farm" on Acacia Street. There was an old house on the property in which the family moved. Shortly after moving onto the farm, Peter L built a new house (shown above). It had four bedrooms and only one bath. There was no electricity in the home when it was first built.
Mary Alice recalls: "Acacia Street was a wonderful location to raise a family. I remember the fun we had as we roamed the nearby hills... Some of your adventures included examining the mouth a mysterious cave and exploring the Sycamore Canyon Wash. Climbing hay stacks and having horses and mules to ride, and a pony with a little cart added to our enjoyment of being young and carefree (and safe) during our early childhood years. Peach, apricot, and other fruit trees were planted on the four acres surrounding our home. The small farm was also equipped to raise chickens. There were incubators, hatcheries, brooder houses, hen houses and pens. And we had a cow to supply milk for our family." From Nona's book, Green Shamrocks to Golden Poppies, p. 69-73.

In 1910, Mother Ferry's parents, Mary Belle and William O'Brien, came to live in the Acacia Street home with the growing Ferry Family. In the early 1920s, Peter L's father, James Ferry, came to live with them also. California was booming!

The original Acacia Street home has been remodeled, but you can see the unmistakable stone chimney is still there.
The four-acre farm has been swallowed up by homes and apartment buildings.

My Dad, Bill Sr was born in 1917. I’m pretty sure that’s him in the 1924 image standing in the driveway, as Dad had said it was him. I wonder, given that he was born in July of ‘17, that the year of the two pics could have been 1918. Somebody did a nice job bring clarity to that one family portrait. Thanks Delores and Sue and?

The two family portraits must’ve been taken in 1918. In both of the pictures, everyone is dressed the same, one picture on the back porch, one on the front porch . . . the photo must’ve been taken on the same day .
Thanks Bill, for setting the record straight. 😊
