Learning to drive the Studebaker
Well it happened this way. I was 17 at the time. I noticed that people started their car while it was still in gear; what I didn’t observe, however, was that they had their foot press down on the clutch at the time. It all happened so quickly! The car lurched and suddenly we had gone through the wall of the garage and into the backyard. My five-year-old brother, Billy, who was a passenger in the car, made it worse by letting out loud cries of fear. Workmen came running and laughed when they saw what had happened and that the occupants of the car what are intact. I pleaded with them in to rebuild the garage wall before dad came home from work. Dad was strict and I was afraid of what he would do when he saw my handiwork. But dad came home and he also had a hearty laugh.
