Filming of Top Gun
Taking Place in Lemoore
It
has been more than three decades since the movie, Top Gun, first hit theatres
and many fans are excited about the new sequel coming out in 2020.
Last
week, Tom Cruise -- who plays Lieutenant Pete Maverick in Top Gun -- was
spotted in Lemoore while filming part of the new movie, Top Gun: Maverick.
Cruise, managed to keep his stay in Lemoore brief, as he was only there on
Tuesday and Wednesday. The filming took place at the Lemoore Naval Air Station,
which is the newest and largest Master Jet Base in the U.S. Navy. When word
spread that Cruise was on base, several people tried showing up to the naval
air station to get a glimpse of the actor.
Paramount
Pictures arrived in Lemoore with roughly eight trailers full of equipment and
production staff. The crew spent a week filming parts of the movie, but not all
scenes required Tom Cruise to be there.
The
Department of Defense approved the production late last year. Most of the
scenes have been shot on U.S. Naval Aircraft carriers, including naval aviators
and crews as extras in the film. Combat scenes will feature Lemoore’s very own
pilots flying the F-18 Super Hornet and the new F-35 Strike Fighter.
Originally
scheduled to hit theatres in July 2019, Top Gun: Maverick had its premiere
pushed back almost a year by Paramount Pictures. The studio announced that the
film’s new release date will be June 26, 2020.
